Starting from version 6.0, Internet Explorer includes a feature to export and import browser settings. Using this feature of IE you can save IE settings and later restore them. This feature may come handy when you format your computer and after re-installing Windows, you want your IE Favorites back. You can even transfer the settings to a different computer.
Open Internet Explorer and select File → Import and Export. This would start Import and Export Wizard. If you are not able to see the File menu, you can press the Alt key on your keyboard to bring it up.
In the Import and Export Wizard you are given three options – (1)Import from another browser, (2)Import from a file and (3)Export to a file. These options are explained below :
- Import from another browser
This option allows you to import various settings like favorites and feeds from another detected browser. Surprisingly, IE seems to detect only Firefox.
- Import from a file
This option allows you to import various settings from a file. This file is a type of file you create when you choose the third option. You can import favorites, feeds and cookies from such an file.
After making the choice of Import from a file click Next. Choose what you want to import from this file – favorites, feeds or cookies. You can select one or all of them; click Next when selected. Then browse for the file(s)(one file for cookies, one for favorites and one for feeds) from which you are going to import the settings and click Next. It will ask you location of favorites, most people would just click Next. Finally click Import and Finish and you are done.
- Export to a file
This option allows you to export IE settings to a file. You are given the choice of exporting favorites, feeds and cookies. You can later use this file to import settings back into IE on the same computer or some other computer.
After making the choice of Export to a file click Next. Choose what you want to import from this file – favorites, feeds or cookies. You can select one or all of them; click Next when selected. Then browse for the location of file(s)(one file for cookies, one for favorites and one for feeds) to which you are going to export the settings and click Next. It will ask you location of favorites, most people would just click Next. Finally click Export and Finish and you are done.
And no export for stored Passwords? (in the browser, not in the cookies)
This title very misleading, these are just favourites… Settings refer to Tools -> Options -> settings. Microsoft never called favourites as settings.
I just saw this stupid comment. If you are going to make a claim, take the two seconds required and actually do it. If you bothered to click on the import/export tool you would see that Microsoft asks how the user wants to import or export their browser settings. Furthermore, if you go into Tools > Internet Options > General Tab (Settings), you will find that these aren’t “settings” rather “Website Data Settings”.
I came here to look for what the title supposed to give, it dismayed me that it its false info.
