Clean an infected computer using VIPRE Rescue

If your computer is infected with malware and viruses, and either you do not have an antivirus solution installed or your current anti-virus solution is not able to clean the computer fully, then you should give VIPRE Rescue a try. The VIPRE Rescue Program is a command-line utility that will scan and clean an infected computer that is so infected that programs cannot be easily run.

You can download the VIPRE Rescue file from http://live.sunbeltsoftware.com/. The download is available in form of a self-extractable executable. The file name is in the form VIPRERescue6944.exe. This program is updated regularly, so you should download it from the VIPRE web site each time you want to use it.

Download this file and save it on the Desktop of the infected computer. If you do not have internet connection on the infected computer, then download it on a computer with internet access and copy it over to the infected computer using a USB key.

The scanning and cleaning is best done in the Safe Mode of Windows. You have to boot the computer in safe mode. To boot the infected computer in the safe mode, press the F8 key repeatedly upon computer boot. You would see a list of options, from which you have to select the Safe Mode using the arrow keys on your keyboard and press Enter. The Windows will start to load the Safe Mode.

Once the Windows Safe Mode has started. Double-click on the VIPRE Rescue program file to execute it. You would see a dialog prompt : if you want to extract the VIPRE Rescue Scanner to your computer? Choose Yes to continue.

You would see a WinZip Self-Extractor window. You can choose a folder path where you want to extract the files. It is recommended that you leave the extract path to the default C:VIPRERESCUE. Leave the checkbox labeled When done unzipping open : deep_scan.bat checked. Click on the Unzip button to start extracting.

Once the extraction is complete, the scanning of your computer will start automatically. The VIPRE Rescue Scanner will scan the Registry, running processes, rootkits, boot sectors and other files on your computer.

After many minutes of scanning (depends on your hard disk size and how many files you have on your hard disk), the scanner portion of the VIPRE Rescue program will stop and the cleaner will run cleaning all the detected threats (malware and viruses).

On my test computer, it took about approximately 35 minutes of deep scanning and found 8 threats (deliberately placed). The VIPRE Rescue program is a very good emergency malware and virus scanner and cleaner. It did a great job in scanning and removal of the malware and viruses. It is very useful in the virus removal of a system on which programs are not running as expected due to infection.
