Wally : Automatically Get New Desktop Wallpapers in Windows

My teenager niece is a big fan of Lady Gaga. Yesterday when I came home she was looking for Lady Gaga wallpapers on Google Image search but seemed unsatisfied. She asked me if there is any way Windows can automatically find Lady Gaga wallpapers and use them as Windows desktop backgrounds. I told her,”Yes, there is Wally!” Wally is a cross-platform program which runs in Windows, Linux and Mac. Wally can automatically query a multitude of web sites like Google, picassa, flickr, Yahoo! etc. based on your pre-specified search query and download images. It can then use these images as desktop wallpapers – saving your time and helping you make your Windows desktop look beautiful.

Wally is available for Windows, Mac and Linux in form of EXE setup, DMG package and RPM installer. You can choose the right package for your system. For this article we selected the Windows setup. After installation of the Wally is complete, it puts an icon in the notification area. You can right-click on this notification area icon to open the Settings window as shown.

In the Settings window, you can specifiy which site is to be used to look for image search. You can specify search query strings for each web site along with site specific settings (e.g., using strict search in Google or filtering adult content in Yahoo!). You can specifiy search query strings for more than one web site. You can also choose the time interval to switch images, whether to draw a border around the images and how to position these images on your desktop. Additionally, you can also choose to use images from your hard disk under the Files and Folders section.

In the Settings section, you can choose other advanced options like auto-starting with Windows, using full desktop area for images etc. You have to select full-desktop screen. After choosing proper settings to your taste and saving them, you can set Wally to Play by right-clicking on the notification area and choosing Play. This would start the process of automatically finding and downloading the images based on your specified search queries – and using them as your desktop wallpaper.

So if you want to make your desktop look pretty and adorn it with cool looking wallpapers but do not want to go through the headache of searching sites for wallpaper images and setting them as your desktop background, then Wally is the ideal software for you.
