RealTemp : Find the Temperature of Your CPU

When you run your computer for a long time, the CPU (processor chip) on the motherboard starts to heat up. All of the modern processors have a built in temperature control which does not the temperature of the chip cross the dangerous limit. Yet if you continue to use your computer in a hot environment, then it would slow down your computer overtime – not to mention a decrease in the life expectancy of your computer. What you can do is monitor your CPU chip for its temperature and if its very hot, then make arrangements for cooling down your computer working area. You can monitor your CPU temperature using the free Real Temp program.

Real Temp is a free temperature monitoring program designed by TechPowerUp. It works for all the Intel single Core, Dual Core, Quad Core and Core i7 processors. Each core on these Intel processors has a digital thermal sensor (DTS) that reports temperature data relative to TJMax. The TJMax is the temperature junction max – the maximum safe temperature of the semiconductor junctions inside the CPU chip. As your CPU heats up, it nears the TJMax. If the distance between the CPU temp and TJMax becomes zero, your processor will start to thermal throttle or slow down.

Here are some of the features of the Real Temp application :

  • Supports all Intel Core based processors (except Pentium 4).
  • Ability to individually calibrate for each core of your CPU.
  • Test Sensors feature will check your DTS sensors for any sign of problems.
  • Keeps track of Minimum and Maximum temperatures with full logging features.
  • High temperature alarm and shutdown feature based on CPU or Nvidia GPU temperature.
  • No installation or registry modifications required.
  • Support for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit)

Real Temp - Monitor CPU Temperature

Using the Real Temp application is very easy. Just download the Real Temp from the TechPowerUp web site and extract the contents of the ZIP archive to a folder. Then simply run RealTemp.exe. You would see a window with the CPU temperature in celsius and the distance to TJMax. If the distance to TJMax is nearing to zero, then your CPU is experiencing very hot conditions.

You can use Real Temp to monitor only the CPU temperature but also the GPU temperature. You can change the settings to automatically alert you if the temperature of processor increases beyond a specified limit. So if you want to take the safe path, keep your CPU at the safe temperature limit and maximize your processor life, then you can use Real Temp application.
