Many new software that you download from the internet come with toolbars and browser hijacker objects. If you are not careful during the installation, then you may end up having many different types of adware, toolbars, browser hijackers, potentially unwanted programs (PUP) and other pests. Usually your installed antivirus program takes care of such undesirable things but you can also use free AdwCleaner to detect and remove these unwanted items from your system. AdwCleaner can scan toolbars and hijackers in all the different browsers like Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox and Opera.
You can download AdwCleaner from the Xplode website. It supports all versions of Windows starting up from Windows XP. The download is a 600 kilobytes portable application. It does not require installation, you can just download and run it. The window that opens up has a very simple interface. Just click on the Search button for AdwCleaner to start scanning your system.
However, if you want to set a few options for scanning first, then you can click on the tiny ? on the top-left corner of the AdwCleaner window and select Options from the list. This opens up a small window where you can select the checkboxes to disable the scanning inside various browsers like Firefox, IE, Chrome, Opera. You can also disable detection of the Ask toolbar and proxy settings. Disabling these detections can make the search process a little faster, but an ordinary use does not require to set any of these options.
At the end of the scan, a notepad windows would open up showing you the results. The results display a bit of information about your system, the AdwCleaner version, items found in various browsers and critical system areas like Windows registry. On my system it detected Babylon toolbar and PIP toolbar that I was not aware of.
Now if you want to get rid of the detected items, just click on the Delete button. You would be prompted with a confirmation dialog. When you click OK, it would close all the open programs and make changes to your system. It would also restart your system. There is no confirmation for restarting your system, so you should better save all your work before you click on the Delete button. Upon restart, AdwCleaner will display a log file showing the files, folders, and registry entries that were removed.
AdwCleaner is a tiny little tool that can help you quickly get rid of adwares, toolbars, browser hijacker objects, potentially unwanted programs, malicious proxy settings and more. It is a portable program so it does not require any installation. In spite of being a portable application, it features an Uninstall button which can be used to delete the downloaded AdwCleaner program file.
