If you have been watching the Spelling Bee competition year after year on your TV, then you would be excited to know about Google’s new experiment – Spell Up game for Chrome. This game uses latest technologies offered by Chrome and helps people learn English or improve their existing English skills. The game consists of many different levels and in the each level you are asked to spell the words, find the missing letters or rearrange the letters to form the correct words. You can use either your microphone to spell the words or use your keyboard to type in the letters.
As you start the Spell Up game, it asks you to choose an English level from Beginner, Intermediate or Expert levels. You can choose any level you want, but as you would have expected, the beginner level consists of simple words and the expert level makes you spell harder words.
By default, it makes you use the microphone in your headset or notebook, but you can choose to your keyboard anytime. When the game has started, you can click on the settings icon near the lower-left corner and choose whether you want to use the UK English or US English (UK English has a male voice, while US English has a female voice), toggle the sound effects, whether you want to use keyboard or microphone. If you have more than one microphone devices, then you can choose the correct device here as well.
After this you can continue to play the game. In the beginning of the game it just speaks out the words to you and asks you to spell them correctly. But at later levels more difficult words come along with tasks to rearrange the letter to form a word and find the missing letters in a word. At each successful step, it takes you up a step. But if you misspell a word or miss a task, then you are dropped down multiple steps. After climbing up 10 meters or steps, you complete a level. There are helping tools available too.
Verdict:
I found this Spell Up game from Google very interesting and fun, but for some reason sometimes it could not understand my pronunciations, so I switched from microphone to keyboard and finished many levels. Also if you plan to finish the levels at any later time, it is wise to login to your Google account otherwise you would have to start all over again from the level 1.
