Stop Search Suggestions in the Edge Browser

Microsoft Edge web browser, that comes pre-installed with Windows 10, has a unique interface. It does not show a separate address bar like many other popular web browsers do. Instead it has a search bar that also works as the address bar if you type a website address in it. When you start typing something in this search bar, it shows search suggestions fetched using the default search engine for Edge web browser. This is not really desired if you are going to just type in a web site address, besides it can also be very embarrassing for certain types of search suggestions. To avoid all these situations, you can simply disable the search suggestions in the Edge web browser.

Edge Browser Search Suggestions

Here is how you can stop Microsoft Edge browser from showing you search suggestions in the address bar:

  1. Press the hotkey Win+R to open the Run dialog. Type gpedit.msc in the Run dialog and press Enter. This will open the Group Policy Editor.
  2. In the Group Policy Editor, expand Computer Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → Microsoft Edge.Stop Search Suggestions in Microsoft Edge
  3. Double-click on the Configure search suggestions in address bar setting in the right-side panel.
  4. In the settings window, select Disabled and then click OK. Stop Search Suggestions in Microsoft Edge

That’s it. The settings apply as soon as you click on the OK button. Now if you open the Microsoft Edge web browser and try typing something in the address bar, then you won’t see any search suggestions. You can obviously revert the setting by following exactly the same steps and choosing Not Configured or Enabled in the last step and saving the settings.

  1. I have Windows 10 Home, therefore, no Group Policy Editor. I want to stop all search suggestions including “typed, history, favorites and any other 100%”. Please advise how I accomplish this or I will have no other choice except to uninstall Chromium Edge from my computer.

  2. There is an item in this same area, a little above “Configure search suggestions in Address bar”, called “Allow Address bar drop-down list suggestions”. Check it out.

  3. Nothing I did will remove search suggestions on edge. I did every suggestions that was made and the
suggestions keep coming. Does windows 10 have a built in security from keeping me from trying to disable search suggestions.

  4. does not work as it is disabled yet still shows tons of search suggestions, right away, after closing and starting up, after rebooting…group policy setting change made ZERO difference and I would be glad to send screen shots if anyone thinks they can help me
