Font Loader

Font Loader is a tiny portable tool to load fonts temporarily in Windows without having to install them. It can load and unload true type fonts and open type fonts in Windows for use with any application. After you have done using the fonts, you can unload them easily using Font Loader tool. It works in Windows XP, Vista, 7,  8 and 8.1. It supports loading of True Type (.TTF) and Open Type (.OTF) font files.

Why use Font Loader?

Whenever it comes to designing a new logo, headline or document, we google for good looking fonts. There are many font related websites too which offer you to download thousands of fonts. But to try out a font, you have to first install it on your Windows PC. If you install too many fonts, it would surely make your Windows PC slow to start, because it has to load all those fonts each time it starts. Font Loader gives you way to load the fonts temporarily in your system without having to install them. This way you can try out as many fonts as you want without bothering about uninstalling them.

You can also use the Font Loader program to load some fonts which you need only for a small photoshop work or creating a PDF. After you are done using the fonts, you can unload the fonts and keep your system resources free for other things.

Using Font Loader

Font Loader does not come with any setup program or installer. It is a portable application. All you have to is unzip it to a folder and start using it. The following steps describe how you can use Font Loader :

  1. Download Font Loader to your computer.
  2. Unzip it to any folder you want on your hard disk using an archiver like WinRAR, 7-Zip etc.
  3. Double-click on fontloader.exe to run it.
  4. Click on the Add Fonts button in the toolbar to select the font files you want to load. You can also drag-n-drop font files onto the Font Loader window. Selected font files would be visible in the listbox. If you try to select the same font file again, it will not be added to the list. Presently, it supports only True Type fonts (.TTF) and Open Type fonts (.OTF) files.
  5. Now you can click on the Load button to load the fonts that you have selected. You would see a message box showing you how many fonts were loaded successfully. It is not necessary that all the font files would be loaded. For example, some of the font files might be corrupt and Windows refuses to load them as fonts.Font Loader 1.2
  6. At this point, when your fonts have been loaded, you can start using them in your programs like Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop etc. You can hide the Font Loader window to the system tray, by clicking on the minimize button in its title bar. This is useful if you do not want Font Loader to come in the middle of your work. You can double-click on the Font Loader icon in the system tray anytime to make the Font Loader window visible again.Font Loader 1.2
  7. When you have finished your work, you can click on the Unload button to unload all the loaded fonts and free up the memory that they were using. Again, a message box would inform you about how many fonts have been unloaded. If you are in a hurry, you can just close the Font Loader window and it would automatically unload all the loaded fonts before closing down.

  1. It doesn’t work for me. As soon as I put load it starts to work and then it says (on the edge of the window) “not responding” and it stays that way.

  2. Awesome program!!! I decided to leave a comment to see if there is any update on the new version of the program with the suggestions posted on the older comments. I started using illustrator heavily and truly see the value on this program. My suggestion in addition to the older ones is to add a “Donate” button so that we can also show you that we appreciate such a useful tool. Many thanks!!!

  3. How to load a font using the cmd?
Can I write a batch file to do them silently at background?

    Thanks.

  4. I love this software. Be careful to start with with Libre Office closed, or it won’t load fonts.

    Thank you very much!

  5. What’s not to work. I’m in Windows 10, works wonderfully! Had a harder time unzipping the container ;=) Would love to use this to manage (ie delete) some Microsoft fonts not needed by me or the system. Any comments? I am the Administrator but get the message from the program I do not have access??
    Trish…thanks for the tool!

    1. Actually the program does not alter any installed fonts. So you cannot make changes to Microsoft fonts installed on the system. It just helps load some fonts temporarily, so you do not have to install them permanently. Thank you for your comments 🙂

    1. I’m in Windows 10 and working wonderfully. Might not be FontLoader, you may have a different issue. The Zip file may have unpacked into an area you do not have access or was corrupted during unpacking, or maybe during download. I’d delete the zip and the working folder and try again. It sure worth the try. Sweet program.

      1. Hi Trisha, do you have any updates on a command line version that runs on windows 10? That sounds absolutely ideal!

  6. Great program! and that too free!
May I ask the time frame within which you plan to make it compatible with windows 10 if at all you o have plans tp do this?

    1. Would you post a link to screenshot about the error you are getting when Font Loader is run on Windows 10? I have tested it on Windows 10 32-bit and it works without any problem.

      1. No error message, Trisha. The program hangs endlessly until killed from the task manager. I am running it on a 64 bit windows 10 version. I track the fonts and add it to the box, I them load them – they do get loaded but from here on Fontloader hangs. I can vouch that the fonts are temp installed as they show correctly in documents and presentations that use them.

But since the program hangs I cannot unload them in the normal manner.
After killing FontLoader they still remain installed until next reboot.
That is the nature of the error

        1. Okay, I searched for the code of Font Loader on my PC, but I could not find it. Looks like it was accidentally deleted when I upgraded to Windows 10. I have to re-write the whole program once again 🙁

  7. Please update it to Win10, it worked fine on the Win7 of my work but now they updated everything to windows 10 and it crashes everytime i try to load the font :/

  8. Hi, your programs is useful when you have few fonts. I have more than a thousand, your program does not seem to want to load beyond a certain number (the field becomes blank). Is that normal ? Have a look on NexusFont for how to handle more if that is something you might be interested in.

    1. Thank you 🙂 Nice point. I will look into it. But this small tool I created for using some fonts that downloaded off the internet, that you do not want to install and just try out. Never realized someone will load more than 1000 fonts 🙂

  9. Many thanks for this. You save my life. I almost purchase crap and slow software only because of this functionality. I’m agree with Blackcrack, using default folder at start will be wonderful.

    Beny

    1. Thank you.I will add this functionality in a few days. I dont know how I missed Blackcrack’s comment. I always work on suggestions if it is doable. You can see the new version in a week or so.

  10. Works like a charm, it’s kind of a pain if you are looking to load lots of fonts at once though. Took me a while to load 272 fonts.

  11. maybe a subfolder with “defaultttf”
    “Font Loader/defaultttf” or “Font Loader/default-ttf”
for fonts loading automatic by start of the program 😉
    best regards

    1. Thank you for the feedback. It is a good suggestion 🙂 Sorry I missed your comment earlier. I am going to add this feature in new version. I hope I can release it in a week or so.
