Add mobile phone to Twitter account

This page was last updated on August 22, 2010

Twitter is a very popular micro-blogging service and everyone is loving it. If you do not want to miss on Twitter tweet updates while away from your computer, you can attach you mobile phone with your Twitter account. This way you would be able to receive latest Twitter tweets in form of SMS (text messages) on your mobile wherever you are. You would also be able to reply, follow, re-tweet etc. using by sending text messages to Twitter. Here is how :

  1. Login to your Twitter account.
  2. Click on the Settings link on the top-right menu as shown,
  3. On the settings page, click the Mobile tab as shown,
  4. Choose your country. Enter your mobile phone number. Then click on the Start button.
  5. You will be shown a a page with a phone number and a message. You have to text the shown message to the shown number. Both vary depending upon where you live. In my case, the message was GO and the number was 40404.
  6. After you have texted the message, the Twitter page will automatically change and say that your phone is now activated.
  7. Now you choose options if you want others to find you by your mobile number on Twitter. You can choose to turn off or on Device Updates, or turn on the direct tweets only. You can turn off receiving tweets on phone in a specified interval everyday, for example when you sleep. You can also choose a PIN number which only you remember — this prevents others (like friends) sending a tweet without your knowledge using your phone. You can find basic tweet texting commands on the right side of the Twitter page (see above screenshot).
