Protect Yourself with Free Bitdefender TrafficLight
The Internet is full of attack web sites that distribute and drop malware on your computer, steal your identity and turn your computer into a zombie. The only way to protect yourself online while browsing the web sites, is to check the safety of a site before you visit it. The Bitdefender TrafficLight is a free cross-browser web threat control which helps you prevent all the phishing and malware websites from being opened in your browser. It supports all the major browsers like Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc.
You can download the Bitdefender TrafficLight from its web site at http://trafficlight.bitdefender.com/. The download is available for Windows only. The 6 MB download is a web installer stub and needs an active internet connection for the full installation to be finished. When you install, it will show an option for enabling the SSL scanning. The SSL scanning would allow the Bitdefender TrafficLight to access your encrypted web traffic, which is not a good idea. You should uncheck the Enable SSL Scanning option if you want to.
After the installation, the Bitdefender TrafficLight plugin would be available in all the browsers that you have installed. When you look up a search engine like Google for a term, it would show ratings for all the links in the search list. It shows a red cross for an attack web site and a green checkmark for a safe web site. You can hover the mouse cursor over the rating icon to see more details.
When you visit a web site, you would see a small grey colored handle near the top edge of the browser. Clicking on this handle would open the Bitdefender TrafficLight toolbar. This toolbar shows the safety rating for the currently open web site. It also has other tools like URL shortner and Ad-Blocker. You can also turn off the TrafficLight by clicking on the power button on the right side.
In the same toolbar, you can click on the Settings to open the settings dialog for the Bitdefender TrafficLight. In this settings dialog box, you can turn on or turn off the ad-filter, phishing filter (for preventing phishing sites), malware filter (for preventing malware attacks) or the search results analyzer (show ratings for search results listings).
The Bitdefender TrafficLight is a great tool for preventing yourself from the malware and phishing sites over the Internet. This tool is still in the beta, but it is certainly going to become a comprehensive browser safety add-on in the future.
