Automatically update device drivers in Windows 7

This page was last updated on April 06, 2010

When you install a new device or insert a USB device, Windows 7 usually automatically installs the drivers for that device. If Windows cannot find the drivers, it pops up a dialog box asking you whether you want to search the driver for this device online. You can enable Windows 7 to continually look for newer drivers online by using Windows Update. These driver checks and updates happen without you even knowing about them. But in Windows 7 these settings can be changed. This is how :

  1. Press the key combination Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type systempropertiescomputername.exe in the Run dialog and press Enter to open the System Properties dialog. Select the Hardware tab.
  3. Click on the Device Installation Settings button as shown.
  4. You would see a settings dialog as shown below
  5. Select Yes, do this automatically and click on the button labeled Save Changes.
