Disable Windows Update to check for drivers in Windows Vista

Last updated on August 14, 2010

When you connect a device to your computer, Windows Update automatically checks over the internet for a new or matching driver. This can be annoying if you already have a drivers CD supplied by the manufacturer. You can disable this feature using this steps :

  1. Press the key combination Windows logo key + R, type SystemPropertiesHardware.exe in the Run dialog and press Enter key.
  2. In the System Properties window, you would see the Hardware tab pre-selected. Click on the button labeled Windows Update Driver Settings as shown,
  3. In the next window, select the option Never check for drivers when I connect a device as shown,
  4. Click OK to save the settings. Close the System Properties window.
