Remove All Traces of USB Drives from PC using USBOblivion

Whenever you insert a USB disk drive into your Windows computer, it makes some entries in the Windows registry. These entries can later be used to view which USB disk drives have been used on your PC. This can be a privacy issue for some people, who do not want others to see which USB drives have been in use on their PC. You can use USBOblivion which is a free utility that can be used to erase all the traces of USB disks and CD ROMs from your PC.

USBOblivion is a free and open source utility designed to erase all traces of USB connected drives and CD ROMs from the Windows registry. It supports all versions of Windows starting from Windows 2000 to Windows 8 (both the 32-bit and 64-bit editions).

You can download it from its Google Code page. The downloads are available separately for 32-bit and 64-bit editions of Windows. It is a portable program, so you do not have to install anything on your PC. Just extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP file and double-click on usboblivion32.exe or usboblivion64.exe to run it.

The user interface is pretty straightforward. You have to click on the Clean button to start the cleaning process. If you do not want to actually make changes to your system, but just want to see a simulation, then leave Do real clean un-selected. If you really want to clean, then select this checkbox. There is also an option to save a backup in form of REG files (Registry Script files) prior to making changes to your Windows registry.

The REG file would be saved in the user’s documents folder which is usually C:\Documents and Settings\[Username]\My Documents for Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows; and C:\Users\[Username]\Documents for Windows Vista and later versions of Windows. If later you want to restore all the changes made by USBOblivion, then all you have to do is double-click on the these REG files. For easy identification, these backup REG files are named with the time and date of making the backup.
