Protection Against Malware with Free 9-lab Removal Tool

You can make use of the free 9-lab Removal Tool to remove malware infection from a PC. It is a completely free software that can detect and remove viruses, rootkits, unveil hidden infections and malicious registry keys that are concealed deep within a system. It is compatible with all Windows PC running Windows XP, Vista, 7 or 8.

You can download the 9-lab Removal Tool from the 9-lab software website. The download is a setup installer for Windows. The downloads are available for both the 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems separately. After the installation, you can run it from its desktop shortcut. As with all the malware scanners, you should update the virus definitions before you start scanning your system for malware. You can update the 9-lab Removal Tool database from the Update section and then clicking on the large orange Update button.

The update downloads a small virus definitions file from the 9-labs server. Once the update is over, you can switch to the Scanner section and choose a scan type. There are four scan modes available – Quick Scan, Flash Scan, Full Scan and Custom Scan. The quick scan searches the key areas of your system for malware using fast scaning technology and does not scan the entire hard drive. The flash scan is even faster and scans only the objects loaded in memory and the autostart programs. The full scan is more comprehensive and searches through all the files, folders, drives and registry for malware. The custom scan looks up for malware only in the folders that you select.

If you are scanning your system for the first time, then you should select the full scan mode. The scanning process will take some time to complete. During the scanning if 9-lab Removal Tool finds a malware, it would attempt to automatically repair it (or delete it). At the end of the scanning, it will show you a summary of how many objects (files, registry keys, processes etc.) were scanned and how many infected objects were detected. A log file is also shown giving the details of the scan.

Under the Settings section, you can set scanner and updater preferences. You can choose to add a right-click context menu in the File Explorer so that you can right-click on any file and scan it, turn on automatic flash scan at Windows logon, save log files automatically and so on. In the updater settings, you can choose a proxy server, update address, choose to update the program etc.

9-lab Removal Tool comes with a great promise of free malware removal but it did not find any malware on my test computer infected with many common banking trojans like Zeus and SpyEye. It is not a full blown antivirus, so you should not completely depend on it for malware protection. You should install a complete antivirus software like avast! in addition to 9-lab Removal Tool for complete protection against malware.
