How to Create System Image Backup in Windows 10

Windows 10 DVD

Just like its predecessors, Windows 10 also allows you to create a disk image backup which is a byte-to-byte full backup of a disk’s contents. In other words, it is an exact copy of the system disk which can be used perform a complete restoration of the system disk (the disk on which Windows is installed) contents. So if your computer has stopped working, then this system image may come handy. Unlike System Restore points, the system image contains all the files and settings from the system disk. This is why during restoration, whole of the system disk is restored without giving you options for restoring individual files.

Here is how you can create a system image in Windows 10:

  1. Press the hotkey Win+X and select Control Panel from the menu that appears.
  2. In the Control Panel search for “backup” and select Backup and Restore (Windows 7) section when it appears.
  3. In the Backup and Restore (Windows 7) section, click on Create a system image from the left side list of options.
  4. It will ask you to choose a destination for saving the system image. You can choose a secondary connected disk or the blank DVD disks.
  5. Choose the disk drives that you want to include in the backup. Typically, you include only the system disk drive for the backup.
  6. Finally, click on the Start Backup button to start the disk image backup.

The system image backup should not be created on the same physical disk as the one on which you have installed Windows. This is because in the case of the disk failure, the backup system image will also be lost.
