How to Boost Bass for Speakers or Headphones in Windows 10

You have bought a brand new speakers for your PC or a set of expensive headphones but are not getting the bass that you hoped you would, then the problem is not with your headphones, problem is in the Windows PC settings. You can easily change the audio driver settings in Windows 10 to boost the bass to enjoy the booming sound coming from your headphones or PC speakers. This setting exists in the stock audio drivers that Microsoft supplies with Windows 10 (also with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7). The setting could also exist in manufacturer supplied audio drivers, for example, in the Realtek HD Audio drivers.

Here is how you go about boosting the bass in Windows PC:

  1. Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select Playback devices from the right-click menu.Boost Bass in Windows 10
  2. Select the Speakers from the list (or any other output device for which you want to change the setting) and then click on the Properties button.Boost Bass in Windows 10
  3. From under the Enhancements tab, select Bass Boost checkbox and then click on the Apply button.Boost Bass in Windows 10
  4. The default bass settings work very well, but you can click on the Settings button to change the frequency and the boost level for the Bass Boost effect.Boost Bass in Windows 10

If you have installed the manufacturer supplied device drivers, then the steps may be a little different. For example, if you have installed the Realtek HD Audio device drivers, then the third and fourth steps would be like this:

  1. From under the Enhancements tab, select Equalizer checkbox and then choose Bass for the Sound Effect setting. Then click on the Apply button.Boost Bass in Windows 10
  2. In order to manually change the frequency range boost, you can click on the ellipses button and open a tiny equalizer window from where you can change the boost levels for various frequency ranges.Boost Bass in Windows 10

Even though these settings do make some difference and really boost the bass, in order to really notice the difference you have to use high quality headphones like the ones manufactured by Sennheiser or Philips.

  2. Bass is under “Equalizer.” Select the Equaizer enhancement and then under the settings, there’s Bass.

  5. open media player. click on ‘squares’ logo on bottom right. right click anywhere on screen. Wow. Loads of options. click on enhancements (oh, that’s where it is in win 10!) adjust graphic equalizer to suit. start on a low volume with each tweak, then increase the volume to see if its right. My new plug and play speakers sounded heavy on bass with films. Metallica nearly took the wall out on bass!! Many thanks to ‘Hazel’ at my speaker manufacturers. Win 10, 64 bit, sound blaster audigy sound card. Hope this helps?

  6. Hello all,
    I just bought a new plug and play set of speakers and the bass tried tearing them apart. They are plugged into a sound card but even the on board socket did the same. I couldn’t find the enhancement tab anywhere despite all the opinions, uninstalling, updating etc. A very nice lady at my speaker manufacturer told me to open windows media player, click on the bottom right logo, then right click anywhere on the screen. Et voila, many options, ‘enhancement’ included. Click on graphic equalizer and have a play ( I suggest on a low volume to start with) then increase to see how your efforts have turned out. I cant thank Hazel enough for this help, as I am pc illiterate. problem sorted, for me.

  7. Please help! I have Brand-new Logitech Speakers. 3 speaker in all. 2 Treble and 1 Big-Base. The 2 Small Treble work, but not the Big Base one. The sound is horribly distorted. I’ve tried all your steps – nothing works. I have a newer windows 10 computer. What am I doing wrong?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!! I took them back to the store and they worked in their computer! Store clerk did not know how to help me!! OMG!!

    1. This means that you have not installed proper drivers for your audio device OR your playback device does not support any enhancements.

I need some help, I had the realtek audio driver already installed on my pc, the headphones I use are sennheiser HD 219s and I have the option to change it but there is almost no difference In the amount of bass, I don’t understand why this is happening as there is plenty of bass when i’m listening to music on my Samsung galaxy s5 neo

    1. I have exactly the same problem on Sennheisser HDR 165 headphones. The sound is very tinny on the PC only. The bass on my Samsung S8 is fine. HELP!
