How to Update VLSub Extension in VLC Media Player

VideoLAN VLC Media Player is the most  downloaded and used media player in the world. It is available for almost all the platforms like Android, iOS, Windows, Mac and Linux. People love it because it does not require any media codec packs to be installed and is still able to play hundreds of different video and audio formats without any trouble. I have yet to see a video file that does not get started to play instantly in VLC Media Player.

Another feature that makes life easy for the people who love to watch foreign language movies is that the VLC media player comes with an extension through which you can download the subtitles from within the media player. This saves time and trouble of hopping from one site to another looking for the subtitles.

The VLSub extension that allows this feature is regularly updated but if you do not want to download the whole VLC Media Player package once again and just want to update this extension then this is how you can proceed:

  1. Close all the running instances of VLC media player.
  2. Download the latest version of VLSub extension from https://github.com/exebetche/vlsub/releases.Update VLSub Extension
  3. Open the folder C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\lua\extensions and delete the file VLSub.lua or VLSub.luac from inside it.
  4. Extract the file VLSub.lua from the downloaded ZIP archive into this folder.Update VLSub Extension
  5. Relaunch VLC media player and now you can use the new version of the VLSub extension. You can access it from the menubar by selecting View → VLSub.

The Linux operating system users have to follows the same steps, but they have to extract the new version of the extension into the folder /usr/lib/vlc/lua/extensions/.
