How to Remove AVG Antivirus When Regular Uninstaller is Not Working

On a new computer that I have assembled myself for gaming, I decided to install AVG Antivirus Free and it turned into a nightmare for me. Having downloaded AVG Antivirus Free from FileHippo, I installed it successfully on my Windows 10 PC. But after that, for reasons beyond my understanding, AVG Antivirus Free refused to download virus definitions even after a few reboots. One day later, I decided to uninstall AVG and switch to Avast Antivirus that I have been using for years without any problem. But now AVG Antivirus Free uninstaller got stuck and won’t do anything except showing the uninstallation progress bar at 2% for half an hour.

If you also run into such situation, you can follow these steps to get rid of AVG Antivirus Free from your PC:

  1. Download AVG Remover from https://www.avg.com/en-us/utilities and launch it.Remove AVG Antivirus Manually
  2. Click on the Continue button and AVG Remover will find any AVG products listed on your PC. Choose to remove the detected product. Even if it does not detect any AVG product, choose to proceed and run the removal tool. In the end, it will ask you to reboot the PC.Remove AVG Antivirus Manually
  3. After PC reboots, AVG should have disappeared from your PC. But to make sure that everything is gone, download Autoruns and launch it. Remove the checkmark from all the auto-start entries that are related to AVG Antivirus. Restart your PC after this.Remove AVG Antivirus Manually
  4. After reboot, delete the AVG sub-folders that could be present in C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files (x86) and AVG sub-folder in the local app data folder (%LocalAppData%).

Now you can download your favorite antivirus and install it on your PC. After getting rid of AVG Antivirus Free, I installed Avast Antivirus and it is working smoothly without causing any problem or interfering in the everyday use of the Windows PC.

  1. This tool won’t remove old AVG versions. I want to remove AVG 2011 Free Edition and I haven’t found the old removal tool from AVG.
