Deskflow: A Seamless Keyboard and Mouse Sharing Solution

Some of us have a working environment that has multiple computers with separate monitors of their own. But it is a little awkward to work with all of these computers using their separate keyboards and mice. If we could work on all these computers using the same set of input devices then it would make things much easier.

This is where Deskflow comes in as a game-changer. Deskflow is a free, open-source application that allows users to share their keyboard, mouse, or trackpad across multiple computers effortlessly. It provides a simple yet powerful way to work seamlessly between multiple devices, significantly boosting productivity.

Deskflow operates using a method similar to remote access applications like LogMeIn Hamachi or TeamViewer. The app needs to be installed on all computers on which the input devices are to be shared in order to establish a connection. Once connected, Deskflow enables a single keyboard and mouse to control multiple devices on the same network, allowing users to interact with multiple systems as if they were extensions of the primary one. This eliminates the need to physically switch between devices, making multitasking across different computers a breeze.

On the computer whose keyboard/mouse is to be shared, we run Deskflow as a server. On other computers, we run it as a client. The server setup requires a password which is needed for the clients to connect.

Since Deskflow is open-source, it provides users with flexibility and control. Its transparent codebase allows developers to modify and customize the app to suit their specific needs, making it ideal for both individual users and organizations. By leveraging community contributions, Deskflow stays updated with new features, bug fixes, and enhancements. This open-source framework also ensures that the software remains free and widely accessible, appealing to those who prioritize open alternatives to proprietary solutions.

Deskflow’s cross-platform compatibility further enhances its value. Whether you’re using Windows, macOS, or Linux systems, Deskflow allows you to switch between them effortlessly. This is particularly useful for professionals who often work in mixed-OS environments, such as developers who use Linux for coding and a Mac for design, or IT administrators managing different servers.

Deskflow is a robust and versatile tool that streamlines multi-device workflows. Its use of a remote-access-like method for sharing control, coupled with its open-source nature and cross-platform support, makes it a must-have for anyone looking to optimize their productivity across multiple computers.
