Disable opening of PDF files inside browser

A PDF file is a portable document file which is a proprietary format of Adobe Inc. This format can carry text, images and fonts. As such these files are device and platform independent. There are two popular programs to view these PDF files – Adobe Acrobat Reader and Foxit Reader.

When you click on a PDF file link on a web page, the PDF file starts to open in the web browser itself. If the file is too big, your browser hangs while the PDF file is being downloaded. If you do not like this default behavior, you can change it in the options so that when you click on a PDF link, the file is not opened in the browser but the default associated program (Adobe Acrobat Reader or Foxit Reader). Here is how you make these changes :

For Adobe Acrobat Reader :

  1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader by double-clicking on its shortcut icon.
  2. Open Edit → Preferences from the file menu.
  3. Select the Internet category from the left side list in the Preferences dialog.
  4. Uncheck the checkbox labeled Display PDF in browser.
  5. Save the settings by pressing OK.
