Minus.com has brought to you 10 gigabytes of online storage space for free. Minus allows you to share your files with others, publish them online and or just use the online space as backup storage space. Minus allows you unlimited number of downloads and unlimited file transfers. You can upload files of size upto 2 GB. To get even more space, you can invite someone you know to use Minus. At the present time, they are giving no option to buy more space.
You can visit http://www.minus.com/ and register for a free personal account. The registration does not even require your e-mail address. Just type in your desired username and password and click on the Sign Up Today button. If the username is available, then you would be registered and immediately taken to your dashboard where you can start uploading your files.
The Minus Dashboard in your web browser provides a very nice and easy to use interface. You can upload files or folders using the Upload button on the top-left. You can toggle the light or dark interface by clicking on the bulb like icon in the top-right side which apparently turns lights on or off. You can view the files in the linear mode, grid mode or in the full screen mode. Previews of some of the supported file types (like JPEG, GIF, BMP etc.) are shown. If you upload media files (music and video), you can play them right inside your browser.
Apart from access using web browser, Minus also provides access through applications developed for Windows, Linux, Mac, Android and iPhone. If you want, you can also use their browser add-ons which are available for Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome. To download any of these applications, you can visit their web page at http://minus.com/pages/tools. You can also look at the screenshots of these applications on the same page.
I installed their Windows application which is fairly easy to install. After the installation is over, it puts a red Minus icon in the notification area (system tray) of the taskbar. Before you start uploading files, it is suggested that you login to your Minus account. To login to your Minus account, right-click on the Minus notification area icon and choose Sign In as shown.
After you have logged in to your Minus account, you can start uploading files to your free Minus storage space. Now, if you hover your mouse over the notification area icon, a window pops up where you can drag and drop any file and it will be uploaded to the Minus servers. If you are not logged in and you upload a file, then it would be uploaded by using a guest account. This is why it is suggested that you should sign in before uploading anything.
If you double-click on the Minus notification area icon, then the main window would open where you can see all your uploaded files and folders. If you click on any of the files, it would be opened in your default web browser. Other than viewing your uploaded files, you can also set options like auto-starting Minus client with Windows in this window.
The Windows application for Minus provides only basic functionality of uploading your files quickly. For the advanced features like sharing your files with other people, you have to open your Minus page in the web browser. Just view a file and then scroll down to the bottom of the page where you can see various links for sharing that file. You are shown links for whole gallery, forum sharing link and the direct file link. You can also also type in the email address of any person and click on the Send button to email the link to that person.
Minus does not provide encrypted storage like Wuala or synchronization functionality with devices like SpiderOak, but it does provide more free online space than any other online stoarge service. So if you want a large amount of storage space at no cost, then check Minus online storage service.
