I have a Canon Pixma multi-function inkjet printer which has four different functions – scanner, document printer, photo printer and copier. Scanning on this printer is very easy, all you have to do is press the Scan button on the printer itself and it automatically scans and saves the document in PDF or JPEG format. The only problem is that I have no way to edit and cleanup the scanned images or documents before saving them. For example, we often put the documents at a slight angle and it comes scanned skewed – which I want to edit and straighten it up. After looking up for a few minutes, I found out a great scanner application Orpalis PaperScan that not only scans documents from scanners but also lets you clean up and edit the scanned documents before saving them.
Orpalis PaperScan is a free and powerful TWAIN and WIA scanning software. Because of WIA support it can import pictures from cameras, handheld devices and more. Additionally, you can also load up previously scanned documents in PaperScan to edit them. PaperScan supports many different types of images (e.g., JPEG, PNG, TIFF) and PDF documents. It comes with an OCR engine so you can also extract text from the scanned images or documents.
You can download Orpalis PaperScan Free Edition from the Orpalis website. The download is around 7.8 megabytes in size. The download is a setup installer using which you can install it on your system. After the installation is finished, you can run PaperScan from its desktop shortcut.
Using Orpalis PaperScan Free Edition is very easy. You can click on the Acquire Image button to scan a document or image from your scanner. It supports fladbed scanners and also document feeders. You can also open existing images by clicking on the Import Images button. Once the document or image is scanned, you can start to edit it. You can adjust its color, brightness, contrast and gamma. You can remove punchholes from the edge of a document. You can resize, rotate, crop and smooth images. You can also apply effects like sepia, contours or scanlines. After you are satisfied with the results, you can save the document as PDF, TIFF, JPEG, JBIG2 or PNG file.
Orpalis PaperScan is a very good and easy to use scanner application. It supports all the scanners through the TWAIN and WIA interfaces. It provides both flatbed and document feeder support. It also has duplex scanning support if your scanner has that feature. When saving as PDF document, it also lets you encrypt and password protect your PDF files.
