I am in the habit of making backups of important files every month. Although this habit of regular backups is very useful and keeps your data safe, but it creates multiple duplicate files on my hard disk. Last time I checked I had six sets of same identical files on the hard disk. I wanted to get rid of older backups of identical files, so I used Auslogics Duplicate File Finder. It is a freeware Windows application that can help you find duplicate identical files on your system. Usually you want to keep only one file from the duplicates. Duplicate File Finder also helps you remove the duplicate files saving only one of them.
Auslogics Duplicate File Finder helps you to find and delete duplicate files that are wasting space on your hard disks. Auslogics claims that this Duplicate File Finder tool can increase free space on your disk by as much as 50%. Here are some of the features of Duplicate File Finder:
- Finds identical pictures, documents and any other files
- Compares files not only by names, but by their content
- Can significantly increase free space on your disk
- Helps you to organize your media collections
- Reduces time needed to defragment your hard drive
You can download Auslogics Duplicate File Finder from the Auslogics website. The download is an installable application of more than seven megabytes. After the installation, Duplicate File Finder launches automatically but you can also start it from its Desktop shortcut. It offers a wizard like interface to find and remove the duplicates. In the first step, you have to select the hard disk partitions (volumes) which are to be searched for duplicate files and what kind of files to look for.
In the search critera steps, you have to specify file types, the size limit of files to look for, whether to ignore file dates or file names and how to remove the found duplicates. You can remove the duplicate files by deleting them permanently or sending them to the Recycle Bin. After you click on the Search button, it takes only a few minutes to scan all your hard disk (mine is 160 GB hard disk) and reports you of all the duplicate files found. The scanning is done based on file name, file date and MD5 hash of each file. You can select one from the various identicial copies and click Delete Selected to get rid of them. If you find it overwhelming to select one from each group of the duplicate files, then you can click on the Select and choose Select all duplicates in each group to automatically select all the duplicates in each group leaving only one file de-selected.
If you are scared of deleting files, then it has a Rescue Center which allows you to create a backup of the duplicates before you remove them. You can restore the deleted files from these backups if you accidentally delete some important files.
