When you start Windows, many programs are automatically loaded along with it. Some of these programs are not required for Windows to work properly and only make Windows slower to start. You can remove these unnecessary startup items using the free Synei Startup Manager. This freeware program can automatically scan the startup items and show you which of them are not needed or which of them should be disabled.
You can download Synei Startup Manager from the Synei software website. The download is available both in form of a setup installer and as a portable application. The portable application does not install anything on your system and can be copied to your USB key for using with any computer. After you have downloaded the portable edition of Synei Startup Manager, extract the files from a ZIP archive to a folder and run StartupManager.exe from there.
When Startup Manager is launched, it shows a list of all the startup items on your system. Details about every item like startup path, registry location, enabled/disabled status, startup item name etc., is displayed in the list. You can right-click on any item and choose to run it, google about it, disable/enable it or delete it.
Apart from these basic functions which are present in any startup manager program, Synei Startup Manager offers you to scan the items and tell you if they are really necessary for your system. Synei Startup Manager uses a signature database of around 16,000 programs for this kind of scanning. To scan based on the preferences of many users, select User Choice checkbox. To scan and see if items are needed or not, select Not Needed checkbox. To scan for items that you should disable like spyware or potentially unwated programs (PUPs), select Should Disable checkbox. You can select one or more of these checkboxes at the same time. Finally click on the Scan button. Synei Startup Manager would change the status of the items it finds as Not needed or To disable. You can apply the suggested changes by clicking on the Apply button.
Using the Synei Startup Manager, you can also add a new startup item to the Windows registry. To do so, select File → Add New Startup Entry from the menubar. This would open a window where you can enter all the information about the new startup item. You can select a program file, select its arguments, select whether you want the auto-start this program for current user (you) or for all users and finally click on the Add to Startup button.
