Driver Magician : Backup Your Windows Device Drivers

Although latest versions of Windows do not really need third party device drivers to be installed, yet there are still some devices like printers which require their own drivers to be installed. If you bought a branded PC or a second hand PC that did not come with a drivers CD, then you cannot install the third party device drivers if you format your hard disk and reinstall Windows. Some of these device drivers are not even available online. This is where the free Driver Magician Lite software comes in. It can create a backup of your installed device drivers to a folder so that you can reinstall them when needed.

You can download Driver Magician Lite from their website. The download is available both as an installer and also as portable application packed inside a ZIP archive. You can extract the ZIP archive contents and run Driver Magician Lite.exe to launch the Driver Magician Lite program. It shows a list of all the device drivers installed on your PC. The Microsoft supplied drivers are listed in the black color while the third party device drivers are listed in the red color.

You can select one or more of the drivers in the list. Since Microsoft supplied drivers are installed during Windows installation or when you connect the device, it is useless to make a backup of these drivers. You should backup only the third party device drivers which are shown in the red color. To select a driver in the list, place a checkmark in the respective checkbox. Then you can click on the Start Backup button to start the backup. It would ask for a folder where you want to create the backup before proceeding.

The process may take some time in making the backup of the selected drivers depending on the number of drivers and the number of files associated with them. In the end, you would have a folder with sub-folders for drivers of each of the selected devices. The drivers are not saved in the setup installer executable format, but in the INF file format.

The Driver Magician allows you to quickly and easily backup your device drivers so that you can reinstall them at any later use. This is very useful specially when you do not have the drivers CD or you cannot find the drivers on the internet.
