Like the novels, magazines, journals, newspapers and the text books, the comic books have also gone electronic. Now many of the comic book publishers offer you to purchase and download the comic books in the e-books formats. Some of the websites being run by comic book enthusiasts also offer free but legal downloads of the very old copyright-free comic books from the 1930’s or 1940’s era. Most of these comic books are available in the CBZ or CBR formats. The CBZ is just a ZIP archive of the JPEG images of the comic book pages while the CBR is the RAR archive of the images. A free comic book reader application Comic Seer allows you to read the CBR and CBZ format of files.
Comic Seer is available for free from the website of the Xylasoft software. It is available for Windows as well as for the Linux operating system (both for the 32-bit and 64-bit systems). In Windows it integrates with the CBZ and CBR files so that you can just double-click on them to open in the Comic Seer application.
When you launch the Comic Seer application for the first time, you have click on the + button to create a library. This involves your selection of the folder that contains all of your comic book files, and choosing a name for the library. Once a library is created, you can see all the comic e-books inside it and double-click on any of the comic e-books to open them for reading.
In the comic book reading interface, you can choose to view it in the single page or dual page format. You can zoom-in or zoom-out, rotate or fit the the pages to the screen. You can also click on the Full button in the toolbar to read the comic book full screen. In the full screen mode, you can click on the pages to open the next page, press 1 and 2 on the keyboard to switch to single-page mode and dual-page mode respectively.
In the options for Comic Seer, you can choose to re-open the comics on restart, default page view, default page scaling, background color (which is black by default), page numbering location, thumbnail size for the pages and more.
