Summer is on full swing and a baking heat wave is sweeping across the nation. It seems like that each day is hotter than the previous day. I personally check the temperature every morning and every evening in the hope of rains coming with some relief but only to find it getting worse everyday. If you want to monitor the weather without having to visit those bloated weather sites, then you can use the ezWeather tool. The free ezWeather tool is a small and simple tool which keeps you informed about the latest weather conditions and shows forecasts for your selected area.
ezWeather claims to get the weather information from accuweather.com, a leading and reliable weather information website. It puts an icon in the system tray of Windows and shows the latest temperature in this icon. The ezWeather application is available for Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista and 7. You can download it from ezWeather website. The downloaded file is around 800 kilobytes in size. During the installation you are given an option to install the standard non-unicode edition or the unicode edition. The non-unicode edition should be chosen for earlier versions of Windows (Windows 98, Me etc.) while the unicode edition should be chosen for Windows XP, Vista, 7 users.
The installation program is faulty and throws up an error in the end but the error is about not executing the program so you do not have to worry about it. You can start the program from the Start Menu shortcut. When you start the ezWeather program it places an icon in the notification area of Windows. You can click on the icon to show the full ezWeather window. In this ezWeather window, you can set your location by clicking on the Location Editor button. Once you have added you location, you can select it from the drop-down list shown next to the Location Editor button. Then click on the Refresh button to load the latest weather data from accuweather.com.
This window would display the current weather conditions for the selected region (or city) as well as weather forecasts for the next two days. You can click on each of these displayed weather graphics and it would open the accuweather.com page with much more details for the selected region and day.
You can also choose the units of temperature between Celsius and Fahrenheit by clicking on the Temp Unit button. Obviously, you do not want to view the full ezWeather window all the time, so you can hide it by clicking on the Hide button. Alternatively, you can click on the notification area icon to hide it. Clicking on the notification area icon again, shows the ezWeather window again. With the ezWeather window hidden, you can hover over the notification area icon to view the quick weather information balloon for the selected region.
You can click on the Options button in the main ezWeather window to open the settings window. In the Options window, you can toggle displaying of temperature in the system tray, starting ezWeather with Windows, logging temperature for a region and auto-update timers. You can also set Trillian (a messenger application) and Yahoo! Messenger to display the current temperature in your status if you want.
