The importance of using secure and not-easy-to-guess passwords becomes evident with the latest news of hacking done by the security agencies of some countries. The first step of staying secure online is to use very obscure, lengthy and random passwords so that nobody can guess them or use dictionary attack methods of hacking. If you cannot think of a secure password, then the freeware program RandPass can help you generate secure random passwords.
You can download RandPass from its developer Denis Kozlov’s website. The download is available as a portable application – there is no need to install it on your computer. It supports all versions of Windows starting from Windows XP SP3. The download is a very small ZIP file. You can extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP archive and run RandPass.exe from there.
In the RandPass window, there are many options to generate passwords. You can select the password length, number of passwords that you want to generate, whether the password should have uppercase letters, lowercase letters or digits etc. You can also eliminate the passwords with repeated digits and similar looking characters. There is an option to include your own custom character sets in the passwords and define a format for password generation. After this, you can click on the Generate Passwords button and it would display all the generated passwords in the right-side listbox.
You can also save the passwords that you have generated either by selecting File → Save passwords from the menubar or by using the hotkey Ctrl + S. The passwords are saved in a text file from where you can use them easily.
The RandPass is a portable application that you can keep on your USB key and use it whenever you need a strong password. It is very helpful tool to keep your online accounts safer.
