Kaspersky Security Scan is a free utility that can scan your system for all types of security risks. It can check your system for malware, vulnerabilities, presence of a protection software (antivirus) and more. It then generates a report about the found items that could be putting your system at risk. Even if you have an antivirus installed, you can use this utility to have a second opinion about your system security settings.
You can download Kaspersky Security Scan from the Kaspersky Labs website. The downloaded executable is just a boot strapper which connects to the Kaspersky servers to download the setup of around 55 MB in size. After this the installation starts which is a breeze to go through. It launches automatically after the installation is complete, but it can also be run from its shortcut on the desktop.
At the bottom of the window, you would find two magnifying glass graphics. Clicking on the the left magnifying glass would start the quick scan and on the right magnifying glass would start the full scan. There are no settings to choose about the scanning. As soon as you click on the magnifying glass icon, it starts to scan your system for all the possible security risks.
During the scan it would check your system for the presence of a security product (antivirus or antimalware), for any malware, viruses or trojans and for security vulnerabilities. The progress of the scanning process is shown in form of a percentage at the bottom of the Kaspersky Security Scan window. When the scan is comeplete, it would show you a summary of how many malware, vulnerabilities and other issues have been detected on your system.
Although, Kaspersky Security Scan can find malware and other risks on your PC, it is not able to remove or repair them. When you click on the Problems Found or Fix Now graphic, it takes you to the Kaspersky products website where you can buy Kaspersky Antivirus or Kaspersky Internet Security. Even if you do not intend to buy any of the Kaspersky product, you can download and install then in a trial mode.
