Many people these days like to work in the comfort of coffee shops. They bring their laptops, ask for the WiFi password and order one coffee after another for hours. And when it is time to leave, they just fold their laptops (close the laptop lid) and walk away. They do not bother to shutdown the computer using the Start menu or using the Alt+F4 method. Actually, Windows can detect when someone closes the lid of their laptop and take an action like shutting down the computer, put the computer to sleep etc.
Here is how you can modify which action Windows 10 should take when you close the laptop lid:
- Press the Win+X hotkey and select Control Panel from the menu that shows up.
- In the control panel window, search for “lid” through the search box.
- Click on the Change what closing the lid does from the search results.
- In the window that opens, you can change the options for When I close the lid. You can choose what happens when you close the lid when the laptop is running on battery only, and when the charger cable is plugged in. For both, you can choose options – Do nothing, shutdown, sleep, hibernate etc.
All the laptop lids or screens have a small magnet inside it. When you close the laptop lid, the magnet comes in the close vicinity of a switch placed inside the laptop body which sends the signal that lid has been closed. This is how Windows knows when you have closed the laptop lid.
