How to Change FTP Application for Mozilla Firefox Browser

Starting with Firefox 90, we can no longer access FTP servers directly using Firefox. Instead of this, we have to add an external FTP application for opening FTP links. We have previously posted about how we can quickly add an FTP app to Firefox.

But suppose you want to add a new FTP app to Firefox or if you want to remove an already added FTP app, then we have to change these settings from Firefox preferences. In the following article, we show you how you add, change or remove FTP applications to the Firefox web browser.

Adding or changing FTP apps in Firefox browser

Imagine you have already added an FTP app for opening FTP links and now want to use another new FTP application. For example, if you have already added WinSCP and now want to add FileZilla. So here is how you can add a new FTP application for opening FTP links in Firefox:

  1. Launch Firefox browser, click on the menu icon (three horizontal lines near top-right corner) and then select Settings from there.
  2. In the preferences tab, select the General tab and scroll down to find Applications section.
  3. In the search box type ftp, click on the Action next to the ftp content type and select Use other.Change FTP App for Firefox
  4. In the window that opens, click on the Browse button and select the program for your FTP client. For example, if you want to select FileZilla then you have to select filezilla.exe file from the FileZilla installation folder.Change FTP App for Firefox
  5. You can select the default FTP app from the list shown for the FTP content type.
  6. This is it, now you can close the settings tab.

Removing already added FTP apps in Firefox browser

Suppose you have already added many FTP applications in Firefox. Now you want to remove some of these apps from Firefox. So this is how you proceed for removing FTP apps:

  1. Open Firefox settings just like before. You can also manually enter about:preferences in the address bar.
  2. In the preferences tab, select the General tab and scroll down to find Applications section.
  3. In the search box type ftp, click on the Action next to the ftp content type and select Application Details.Change FTP App for Firefox
  4. In the window that opens, you will see all the FTP apps that have been added before. You can select which of the apps you want to remove and then click on the Remove button.Change FTP App for Firefox
  5. Now you can click on the OK button to close this window.
