How to Backup Blu-ray Discs on Hard Disk Drives

Blu-ray movies are very high quality but they come on expensive Blu-ray discs. In theory, you can store your Blu-ray discs easily for next 50 years. But the durability of optical discs also depends on the storage environment – the temperature and the humidity at which they are stored. If not stored properly, the same Blu-ray disc that was supposed to last 50 years is not going to last even 5 years.

If you have some very important movie or data stored on a Blu-ray disc, then you should also keep the same data stored on the hard disk drive as backup. If the original disc gets bad, you can always retrieve your data from the backup.

For creating a backup of your Blu-ray movies or data discs, you can use a software called “Blu-ray to HDD”. This software is very easy to use and works on all kinds of Blu-ray disc drives. For using this software, all you need is a Windows PC running Windows 7, 8.x or 10 that has a Blu-ray drive attached. The Blu-ray drive could be an internal drive or an external Blu-ray USB drive.

After inserting the Blu-ray disc into your Blu-ray drive, you can launch Blu-ray to HDD. It will automatically detect the Blu-ray disc. Now all you have to do select a folder on your hard disk drive where the backup is created. You can choose to backup the movie in TS or MKV format.

After making these selections, you can click on the big play button and the rest will be taken care of by the software. It also displays a progress window with all the information.

The software is not free but you can use it in the trial mode. The trial version puts a watermark on the video but otherwise it has no other limitations.
