If you are an administrator and do not want users to use the Turn Windows Features on or off in the Control Panel to add or remove components in Windows Vista, then you can disable this feature in the Control Panel.

The Disk Cleanup tool in Windows Vista can be used to clean your hard disk of un-needed temporary files like internet history etc. But this tool does not remove many other types of files like error reports, windows install files, hotfix remnants etc. To be able to clean all these types of files, you need to invoke the disk cleanup tool with special a command line.

All the documents you open in Windows get enlisted in the Recent Documents list which you can access from the Start Menu. If you share your computer with many people and do not want others to know which documents you accessed, then you might want to clear the recent documents list every time you log off or shutdown.

Security Center in Windows checks if your Windows Vista is being automatically updated, has an updated firewall, anti-spyware and anti-virus. But if you are sure that your computer is being updated regularly and has an up-to-date protection, then you may want to disable the security center.

Windows Vista shows large desktop icons by default unlike its predecessors like Windows XP or Windows 2000. But you can change the size of the desktop icons back to small or medium size if you want.

By default, Windows Explorer in Windows Vista shows thumbnails of files and also superimposes the file icon on the bottom-right of the thumbnail for documents of some type. If you do not like this feature then you can easily disable it.

When Windows Vista runs for the first time after the first installation, Welcome Center shows up which you can disable to run at startup. But if later, you want the Welcome Center to run at startup then you have to make some changes in the Control Panel.

Many software provide you with local information such as weather or news based on the country or region you have set in Windows. If you have set a different region, then you can easily change the region from the Control Panel.

Everybody likes to personalize their Windows desktop by setting a cool desktop background (wallpaper), changing screen saver and color themes etc. But what if something happens (like a virus attack) and you lose your settings. You would want to save your personalized settings as a backup.
