Choose what power button does in Windows Vista

Everyone presses the power button on your computer to start their computer. But what happens when you press the power button in a running computer. If your computer run on Windows Vista, then you can choose what happens when you press the power button. Here is how :

  1. Press the key combination Windows logo key + R to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type powercfg.cpl in the Run dialog and press Enter. This would open the Power Options window.

  3. Click on the Choose what power button does link in the left side menu.
  4. This would open a window in which you can choose the power button settings. You can choose from the drop down list, what happens when you press the power button. You can choose if nothing happens, computer shuts down or it goes into sleep.

  5. If you choose the option Sleep, you will have to specifiy, if you should be asked for a password when you turn the computer back on. This password is the same as the logon password. You can choose between Require a password or Don’t require a password. When you are done, clic Save changes to save the settings.
