WizTree: Find Most Disk Space Consuming Files in Your PC

If you find your hard disk space being filled up rapidly, then its natural to think about which files or folders are taking up so much disk space on your hard disk. We have previously posted about Largest File Finder software using which you can find the most disk space consuming files in your PC. WizTree is a similar free program that is very very fast in finding the disk space consuming files on your hard disk.

Here are some of the features of WizTree:

  • Finds the files and folders using the most space on your hard drive
  • Its very fast.
  • Finds the top 1000 largest files on your hard drive
  • Sort the contents of your entire hard drive by folder size and optionally delete files and folders

WizTree is very very fast because it does not use the usual Windows API but accesses the MFT (master file table) to read the files list and their sizes. The MFT is a special hidden file used by the NTFS file system to keep track of all files and folders on a hard drive. Its very fast because scanning for files this way completely bypasses the operating system (Windows).

You can download WizTree from the AntiBody software website. It is a portable program of about 799 kilobytes in size. Being a portable application it does not require installation and you can use it immediately after downloading. In the program window, you can select a partition from the dropdown listbox and click on the Scan button to start scanning that partition for large files. The whole scanning process takes only a few seconds.

The report is shown in form of a tree view. The report shows different columns of percentage of disk space consumed, size, number of items in a folder, modified date and attributes etc. Additionally, you can click on the Top 1000 Largest Files tab to view the top one thousand largest files on your PC. You can right-click on any item in the search results to access the file’s context menu, view its properties or delete it. On my computer, the largest files were from Libre Office office suite.
