A common trend in the new generation of malware is that they try to steal your financial information like credit cards, bank account login etc. Zeus, Dexter and SpyEye are examples of such malware. They capture your financial information using keylogging and screen capture methods. They record your keystrokes when you enter your login credentials into your bank’s website and then send it to cybercriminals’ server. You can protect yourself from such keyloggers by using free SpyShelter software. It is a freeware Windows application that blocks keyloggers, screen captures, webcam captures and sound recordings by unauthenticated programs.
You can download it from the SpyShelter website. The download is around 6 megabytes in size. After installation, you can start using it right away but a reboot is recommended so that it can scan for keyloggers that start with Windows. It places an icon in the notification area of Windows, clicking on which you can open the SpyShelter window to adjust its settings.
In the Settings area of SpyShelter interface, you can find a large number of options. In the General section, you can set it to automatically run with Windows, check for updates at start, integrate with Windows context menu etc. In the Security section, you can set default security level for digitally signed applications, password protection, virtual keyboard and more. In the Advanced section, you can choose if SpyShelter should terminate child processes too when terminating an offending program, terminate all its instances etc. The List of monitored actions section allows you to select or deselect the actions that are monitored. These actions are usually used by keylogger applications to steal your data and intercepted by SpyShelter.
With SpyShelter protection on, if a keylogger tries to capture your keystrokes as you type your password on a website login page (for example, on your banks website or on Paypal login page etc.), SpyShelter blocks it and shows an information box where you can Allow or Deny the action. The option for terminating the keylogger program is not available in the free edition of SpyShelter. If you regulary use a legitimate application that captures your screen or webcam, then you can also add the allow rules permanently for it by checking Remember my choice before clicking on the Allow button.
The SpyShelter Free edition is a very good application to protect yourself from keyloggers of all types that try to steal your personal and financial information. It uses multiple detection methods that monitor keyboard hooks, clipboard capture, screen capture, network and system activities. It can be used along with your standard antivirus application without any problems. The paid premium edition of SpyShelter also offers a firewall for Windows and some other additional features.
