Change Your User Account Name in Windows 8

Windows 8 offers much more flexibility when it come to creation of user accounts. You can use your Microsoft account email address for the user account or just create a local user account, but in any case you would have to select a user name. If you pick a user name for your user account in Windows 8 but later think that you should have chosen a different username, then do not worry – Windows 8 allows you to change your user account name easily. You can follow these simple steps to change the user name for a user account :

Note : The following steps require administrator privilege. An administrator can change his/her own account name as well as the name for other users. Standard users cannot change their account name themselves, but can ask an administrator to do so.

  1. Press the hotkey Win + X and select Control Panel from the menu that pops up. This would open the Control Panel. In the Control Panel, click/tap on User Accounts and Family Safety and then on User Accounts.
  2. If you want to change your own account name, then click/tap on Change your account name. If you want to change another user’s account name, then first click Manage another account, select a user from the list, and then click/tap on Change the account name.

  3. In the next step, you can type in your desired new account name. After typing the new account name, click/tap on the Change Name button and the new account name would be saved.

Although you can change a user account name to anything you want, but the user profile folders would still carry the older user name. If you want to change the user profile folder names too, then you have to create a new user account in Windows 8.
