Have you even seen how in the crime movies and TV shows, our detective or spy breaks into the room of the bad guy, plugs in the USB key and copies all the secret documents on it and quietly walks away. If you have a computer in your office and you do not want this to happen to you, then you should make all the USB devices read-only on your PC. The freeware tool USB WriteProtector can help you do this and prevent just about anyone from writing anything on the USB keys or other USB devices.
You can download USB WriteProtector from the GaiJin website. The download is available as a portable application – there is no need to install it on your computer. It supports all versions of Windows starting from Windows XP SP3. The download is a very small ZIP file. You can extract the contents of the downloaded ZIP archive and run UsbWriteProtect.exe from there.
The USB WriteProtector has a very minimal user interface. There is an option to choose your interface language from the drop-down listbox. It supports almost 30 different languages. Other than this, there are two options to choose from – USB write protection ON and USB write protection OFF. Selecting one of these options either turns the USB write protect settings for your computer ON or OFF. It gives no warning or information before switching the settings.
USB WriteProtector is a very simple and small program to quickly switch the write protect status of your USB devices. It does not change the write protect state of the USB devices that are already plugged in to your computer. But any new devices you connect to your PC will be affected.
