The WebRep plugin from avast! is a browser add-on for Internet Explorer, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. It is similar to WoT plugin and tells you about the reputation of a website. If a website is known to be malicious in nature, then it warns you so that you can avoid visiting it. avast! WebRep is automatically installed in your browsers when you install any of the avast! security products including avast! Free Antivirus or avast! Internet Security. Although WebRep enhances your online security, but if you prefer not to use WebRep, then you can uninstall it very easily. Similarly, if you have not installed WebRep before, then it can be easily installed. Here is how:
- Right-click on the avast! icon in your Windows notification area and select Open avast! user interface. You can also double-click on the avast! system tray icon.
- This would open the avast! antivirus interface. Here you would find various components installed with your avast! security product as well as their current status. Click on the Settings link near the top-right corner of this window.
- In the avast! Settings window, that opens up, select Browser Integration from the left-side menu. Here you would find options to install or uninstall security plugin (WebRep) for Internet Explorer, Chrome and Firefox. To install a plugin, click on the Install link in front of it. If it is already installed in your web browser, then you can click on the Uninstall link to remove it from that browser.
- You can close the avast! Settings and user interface windows now. If your web browser is running, then you will have to close and start it again in order to complete the plugin installation or removal.
The WebRep plugin for web browser is a nice way to be alerted for a phishing or malicious website in advance. It is a useful security add-on for your web browsers. You can install it or remove it from your web browsers using above instructions depending on your preferences. For example, if you have already installed another similar security add-on like WoT or AVG LinkScanner, then you may disable avast! WebRep. But if you have no other online protection related add-ons, then its a good idea to install avast! WebRep in your web browsers.
