The new Windows 10 operating system is coming with multiple desktops feature built inside, but if you do not plan to upgrade to Windows 10 in the near future, then you can still have multiple desktops in your Windows PC with the help of free Virtuoz Virtual Desktop utility. It is based on the already available Sysinternals Desktops that allowed four desktops. The difference between Virtuoz and Sysinternals Desktops is that the former has options to change the number of virtual desktops anywhere between 4 and 20. Otherwise, both of these utilities are similar in all respects – they both are portable applications and run in all versions of Windows.
Virtuoz Virtual Desktop utility parks itself in the system tray and you can right-click on the Virtuoz icon to switch to one of the virtual desktops or exit the utility altogether. You can also double-click on the Virtuoz utility to open its small window and choose one of the virtual desktops from the drop-down listbox. You can also use hotkeys Alt+1, Alt+2, Alt+3, Alt+3 to switch to the virtual desktops number 1, 2, 3, 4 and so on.
If you want to move an application window from one virtual desktop to another, then you can select that window and press the hotkey Alt + ~. You will see options to move that window to other virtual desktops and you can select any one of these.
If you want more than four virtual desktops then you can edit the Virtuoz.ini configuration file and edit the number_of_desktops setting to any number between 4 and 20. By default, this setting is set to 4 which results in having four desktops. In the same configuration file, you can add hotkeys to switch to these virtual desktops and change the hotkey to move windows from one virtual desktop to another.
Virtuoz virtual desktop utility is a portable and configuration application to add virtual desktops to any version of Windows. It allows you to have anywhere between four and twenty virtual desktops without consuming too many system resources.
