NoBot : Lightweight Antimalware Powered by VirusTotal

If you are annoyed by the fact that your antivirus software is making your PC slower then it is time to switch to a lightweight antivirus security product. I personally use Panda Cloud Antivirus on one of my laptops that has low end hardware and cannot run other security products without making the PC terribly sluggish. But now there is another solution called NoBot that makes use of the VirusTotal API to scan your files and processes for spyware and malware.

NoBot is a small and lightweight anti-malware that works on Windows 7 SP1 and above. It uses Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0 and since this framework cannot be installed in earlier versions of Windows, you cannot use NoBot in Windows XP.

After the installation of NoBot in your PC, you will notice an icon in the system tray. This icon does not offer any other functionality other than the indication that NoBot is running in the background and scanning your files and processes as they are accessed.

In the main screen of the NoBot, you can choose to update the virus definitions and upgrade to a pro version. From under the “Scan” section, you can click on the Scan button to scan your computer for spyware and malware. You can also choose to scan a single file.

How your computer is scanned is controlled by the options given under the “Settings” section. You can chosse to scan the registry, detect suspicious files/paths, scan files using VirusTotal, and submit new files for analysis. In the pro version, you can also make it scan for modules injection, scan Windows directories, check Windows security settings, and scan for the startup items.

Conclusion: NoBot is a small and lightweight anti-malware program that makes use of the VirusTotal online virus scanner. It does not consume much of the system resources, but at the same time it takes longer time to scan all the files and processes using VirusTotal.
