Quickly Turn Off AirDrop Feature in iPhone or iPad

Driving to work, I was listening to the news on the radio when I was shocked to learn about a disgusting trend in the New York city subways. Some people commuting through the New York city subways are sending very objectionable pictures to the co-commuter ladies in the same train. They are using the AirDrop feature available in the iPhone and iPad. What they do is look for all the available iPhones with AirDrop setting set to everyone (this setting lets you accept files from anyone). When they find women’s names in the list of AirDrop (e.g., Rachel’s Phone), they target them by sending these repulsive pictures.

If you do not want to become the victim of this horrifying trend then this is how you can quickly change the AirDrop settings in your iPhone :

  1. Swipe up from the lower edge of your screen to make the Control Center appear.
  2. In the Control Center, tap on the AirDrop icon.Turn off iPhone AirDrop
  3. You will be shown three options – Receiving Off, Contacts Only and Everyone. You have to choose either Receiving Off or Contacts Only. The Receiving Off option will completely  turn AirDrop off. The Contacts Only option will allow you to receive files from your contacts only.
  4. Now you will no longer receive requests to accept files from strangers via AirDrop.

AirDrop is an iPhone feature that uses WiFi and Bluetooth to easily share files like pictures, videos or music with your peers. Since iPad also uses the same version of iOS as iPhone, you can follow the exact same instructions as displayed above for iPhone to turn off AirDrop in iPad.
