Trend Micro Ransom Buster is a new security tool that provides Windows users full protection against ransomware attacks. It monitors your protected folders for inadvertent changes made by possibly malicious software and quickly reverses them after blocking the malicious processes. It is not a full features antivirus solution but it just adds an extra layer of security and peace of mind for the Windows users.
A ransomware is a special type of malware that works by locking the computer screen or by encrypting your personal files and then demanding a ransom money to be transferred to the crooks’ bank account overseas to undo all the unwanted changes. Ransomware attacks have become a serious threat in the past few years and Trend Micro’s new tool purports to protect you from such nuisance.
After the installation of Trend Micro Ransom Buster in your Windows PC, you are asked to select folders that you wish to protect. You can select two folders in the beginning but if you share links to Ransom Buster on various social networks then it unlocks this limitation and then you can protect more than two folders and even the system folders. You can add or remove these protected folders later on – in fact, this is the only setting available in Ransom Buster and can be accessed from the Windows notification area icon.
Once this is done, it will continue to monitor the protected folders and monitor your system for any possible ransomware infection. As soon as it detects ransomware like activity, it first blocks the malicious processes and then reverses the changes made by them. You can watch the Youtube video to see Ransom Buster in action – it shows what happens when ransomware infects your PC without Ransom Buster and when Ransom Buster is installed.
Verdict: Trend Micro’s Ransom Buster is a great defense tool against ransomware attacks but it should be used along with regular antivirus software. It does not put too much strain on the system resources and does not bother the users with a plethora of settings.
