Smadav Antivirus is a relatively new security software that is being offered in two versions – free version and paid pro version. The free version, as expected, is limited in the level of protection that it offers. The paid pro version offers everything from scanning to stay-resident protection.
After the installation Smadav places its icon in the notification area icon like any other security software, but it displays a message that it is not a full fledged antivirus, but it is only a complementary antivirus product and should be used only alongside another regular antivirus product such as Avast, AVG or Avira antivirus. Without installing another regular product, it won’t provide the total protection.
As far as free version is concerned, you do not get the stay-resident protection. In the free version, you are allowed to access only the scanner using which you can scan your computer and external devices for malware. We tried to scan a folder containing EICAR test file, but it did not detect it – so perhaps it does not detect all the malware and provides protection only for a sub-set of malicious files.
The protect and tools section of Smadav are blocked and are accessible only to the pro version users. In the protect section, you can enable the USB storage device protection and anti-ransomware settings. Anti-ransomware settings include blocking of Windows scripts and execution of programs stored on USB drives. These settings can also be toggled from the notification area icon of Smadav.
Smadav does not offer many protection features and is only a complementary security product. It offers protection that is already provided by other regular antivirus software making it redundant to install Smadav. But a price of only $8.0 for 1 year of subscription for 3 computers makes it a very lucrative product for older computers.
