Microsoft Editor is a new web browser extension that can check the spelling, grammar and sentence structures as you type text on various websites. It works seamlessly with online document editing apps such as Microsoft Word. It can work with dozens of languages including English, French, German, Spanish, Thai, Hindi etc. It even works for languages that are written right-to-left like Japanese. Many different local variations of the English, French, and Spanish languages are supported.
This browser extension is available for the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge (Chromium based) web browsers. After installing it in your web browser, you have to login to your Microsoft account to enable it. Once enabled, you can access it from the browser toolbar and toggle various features that it offers – spelling check, grammar check and refinement suggestions.
From the same toolbar icon, you can also enable or disable this extension for various websites. This is useful if you do not want to use Microsoft Editor spell checker for a certain website. If you try to access a website or web app that already has Microsoft Editor integrated in it (such as Outlook.com), then the extension will be automatically disabled for that website and cannot be enabled by the user.
In the options for Microsoft Editor, you can choose the proofing language (the language for which the spelling check and the grammar check has to be enabled) from a list of hundreds of languages. You can enable spelling or grammar check from here. You can also add some websites to exclusion list if so desired.
When you are typing text on supported websites (such as Gmail), you will access to the spell check feature of the browser as well as Microsoft Editor. When you right-click on words, browser’s in-built spell check will be used (unless you have disabled it in browser settings). And when you left-click on words, Microsoft Editor will be used for all sorts of proofing.
