Key Status Indicator is a software for Windows using which we can view the status of special keyboard keys in the notification area of Windows desktop. It can display the status of the Caps Lock, Num Lock, Scroll Lock and the Insert key.
Key Status Indicator is not a portable software and must be installed on your Windows PC. After the installation, we have to configure it before it can actually show the status of the supported keys. In its options, you have to choose what kinds of indicator, you would want to be used. You have three choices – icons in small windows, system tray icons, or screen messages.
You can configure it to play sound every time the status of these keys change. It can be auto-started with Windows so that you do not have to manually launch it. For each of the supported keys, we can choose the on color (default is green) and the off color (default is red). Similarly we can choose the off/on sounds, and whether it should beep instead.
Key Status Indicator does not discriminate between the different types of keyboards. You can have a gaming keyboard, mechanical keyboard or a membrane keyboard – it will work with all sorts of keyboards. The software works equally with all sorts of connections as well – PS/2 cable, USB cable, Bluetooth, or WiFi.
We tried it on our Windows 10 system (it supports Windows 7 and above) and it worked flawlessly. We used the system tray icon option and it displayed small square icons of red and green as indicators for the various supported keys. It did not seem to consume much of the system resources.
Key Status Indicator 4dots is absolutely free for personal use but for commercial use, you may have to pay a small fee. The benefits of the licensed versions are that it does not display any nags and can used indefinitely on any of your Windows computers.
