Register Portable Apps in Windows with PORTABLE Registrator

When you try to open a file for which no default application has been assigned by Windows, the operating system displays a list of programs registered for that task. You can choose any of these programs and even choose to make them default on your Windows PC. But this happens only for the installed applications such as Vivaldi browser or Firefox browser.

What if you want to assign a portable application as the default program for a certain file type or protocol? What if you want to use the portable Firefox application as your default web browser on your Windows PC? In those cases you can make use of the PORTABLE Registrator. It is an open-source application that can register any portable program as as web browser or email client.

Using the PORTABLE Registrator is very. You can download and launch it on your Windows PC. It works on both Windows 10 and 11 the same way. In its user interface, we have to select the portable program that we want to register on Windows. Then we have to pick a program type – Web-Browser or Mail-Program. We have to add a program name for it using which it will be known in the Windows settings. And finally we can click on the Register button to register it on Windows.

Once it has been registered, we can find it in the Windows settings. In order to use it, we have to open Windows settings by using the hotkey (Win + I), switch to the Apps section and then Default Apps. You can now click on the web browser or email program to choose the newly registered portable application.

If you want to deregister a portable application, then you can launch PORTABLE Registrator once again, select the target application from the drop-down list and click on the Unregister button.
