Upscayl : Enlarge Images Without Quality Loss

Now-a-days everyone is walking around with a smartphone having a 50+ megapixel camera. With such powerful camera lenses, you get very high-resolution pictures without even trying. But it was not always like this. In fact, a few years ago 8 megapixel camera was considered a big deal. If you have low resolution small size pictures from old times and want to enlarge them, then you can use Upscayl. It is a free AI based image enlargement tool. It is available for macOS, Linux and Windows.

Using Upscayl is very easy. You do not need any accounts for using it. You do not even need an active internet connection for it to work. During the installation it sets up everything on your local system. It uses your system GPU for enlarging the images. Your GPU must have support for Vulkan API. Without Vulkan API support, your GPU will not be able to work with Upscayl.

After launching Upscayl, you have to select the image which is going to be enlarged. After this you have to select the type of enlargement with the gray button. There are three options available for this: general photo, digital artwork or the sharpening function. After these steps, all you have to do is select an output folder and then click on the “Upscayl” button.

There is also an option called  “Double Upscayl” which uses Upscayl twice. With this option selected, your image is enlarged up to 8 times. However, this option might not give good results for images that already have a very high resolution.

Depending on your Windows PC hardware, the GPU, the RAM and other factors, this operation might take a very long time. The images can be saved in form of PNG, JPG or WEBP file formats. In the settings of this program, you can change the upscale factor from 2 times, 3 times or 4 times.
