BlobBackup is a Python based open-source backup utility that works across popular platforms including Windows, macOS and Linux. It is very easy to use and supports a large number of storage destinations including cloud backup services. It supports Amazon AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, Backblaze B2, S3 Storage, and secure FTP servers.
BlobBackup is available in form of pre-compiled installer packages that come with everything needed for launching the backup program. The very first thing we should do after launching BlobBackup is add a new backup task. This can be done by selecting File → Add New Backup from the menubar.
When you choose to add a new backup task, it shows a number of destination storage locations to choose from. We can choose from a local folder, an FTP server, or from various cloud storage services. Depending on the storage type picked, the next few steps will vary. For example, if we choose Google Cloud, then we have to enter the credentials to connect to the cloud server and so on.
We picked a local directory for storage in our test. For this we had to select the folder and assign a password for protecting the backup. This password will be required anytime later when we want to run the backup or when want to restore files from the backups. If you lose this password, you are going to lose the backup.
After choosing a destination for the backup, we have to choose the source files and folders for the backup task. In this step, we have to pick one or more folders from the local storage media. These files are going to be backed up when the backup tasks are run. We can include the folders, exclude the folders schedule the backup, choose retention and more.
When a backup task has been created and configured, it will appear in the BlobBackup window. We can now click on these tasks and choose to run it. Any running backup task can also be stopped from the interface. When a backup task is being run, it will display all the events in the log text box.
BlobBackup is a very simple and easy backup program. It is ideal for both the beginners and the advanced users. When we tried it on Windows 10, it ran smoothly and we were able to backup some of the folders without encountering any serious problems.
