Windows 8 (and its later updates 8.1 and 8.1.1) comes with an array of pre-instaled apps from Microsoft. These apps like Bing Maps, Bing Search, Camera, Bing News etc., are seldom used by any of the Windows users that I have come across. This may be because the desktop applications are still dominating the Windows market and will continue to do so in the near future. If you do not use these apps, then you can use the free Windows 8 App Remover to get rid of all these pre-installed apps. This tool can work with an installed copy of Windows 8 and can also edit these apps directly from the Windows 8 DVD image.
Windows 8 App Remover is an open source Windows application that works with Windows 8, 8.1 and 8.1.1 (SP1 for Windows 8.1). It is a portable tool, so it does not require installation.
As you launch this application, you would see two options under Image to Edit section. The Online option is for editing the current running copy of Windows that you are using. After selecting the Online option, click on the List Apps to fetch the list from the internet. Then you can select which apps you want to remove and finally click on the Remove Apps button to get rid of them.
However, if you want to edit the DVD image for Windows 8, then you have to copy all the files from your Windows 8 or 8.1 DVD to a folder on your hard disk. Then click on the Choose .wim file to select the install.wim file from this folder. You also have to choose a blank folder where this WIM file would be mounted. Next click on the Mount .win to mount the image. Once the image is mounted, you can click on List Apps, select the apps you want to remove, click on Remove Apps button to remove the apps and finally click on the Unmount .wim button to save the changes to the WIM image.
You will have to burn the changed Windows 8 installation files on to a blank DVD and make it bootable, or you can create a bootable USB disk using the WinUSB Maker tool.
Conclusion: Windows 8 App Remover helps you get rid of the pre-installed Microsoft apps from Windows 8 and 8.1. It can be used to remove these apps from the currently installed copy of Windows or from the Windows 8 DVD installation images.
